Celebrating National Apprenticeship Week 2024

Today marks the start of a week-long celebration of Apprenticeships and the exceptional benefits they are continuously bringing to the apprentices who undertake them. We feel extremely proud that we are able to offer these opportunities each year.

Our recent recruit, Ajaz, joined us from The Manchester Metropolitan University for his “sandwich year” during his Marketing degree.

He has been with us for 6 months now, so we decided to catch up with him and find out more about his thoughts on his exciting role so far.

So, Ajaz, what have you thought of your time so far at UBU?

“Since joining back in September, I’ve been really impressed with the forward-thinking mindset at the company and the ways they are seeking to improve in the short and long term. I’ve noticed this through all aspects and areas of the company, one outstanding example is the their state-of-the-art waste treatment facility which is an innovative way of tackling the amount of waste going to landfills. I’m glad to have been given the opportunity to work for a company that genuinely cares for the environment and the communities they work in“.

What have you enjoyed most about your time at UBU so far?

“I’ve enjoyed the responsibility given to me within my role and I’ve enjoyed the projects I’ve been able to work on. One project I enjoyed was designing air-fresheners which we gift to our clients and our drivers hand out to customers.

I also enjoyed organising our Christmas Jumper Day where we raised money for the Bury Cancer Support Centre. It felt rewarding to see how a simple event can help raise money that will benefit people and it was also pleasing to see how the company got behind this”.

This year’s apprenticeship week theme is ‘skills for life’ and so how have you found working in this industry and what skills have you learnt so far?

“For me personally, this industry has been very different to my previous jobs and the work I’ve been doing as part of my degree. However, I’ve enjoyed juggling tasks such as helping on the company’s induction overhaul, managing the social platforms and working on company websites and projects. Through this work, I’ve learnt much more about various ways the industry is changing to meet sustainability needs and I’ve gained invaluable skills already that I can use to further my career progression”.

Finally, what are your thoughts on the development of PAS115 since the start of the project?

“This project has been developing for years and it’s pleasing to see that the company is consistently striving to find ways to divert more waste from landfills than ever before.

Looking at PAS from an industry standpoint, it will help companies have optimum recovery of road sweeping waste, maintain their sites without compromising the planet’s future and create a larger circular economy.

Therefore, I believe PAS115 will drastically help the industry to optimise sustainability and anyone interested in sustaining the planet can learn more on our PAS115 information page“.
