Celebrating National Apprenticeship Week
Today marks the beginning of National Apprenticeship week here in the UK and given the current climate, we feel extremely fortunate to have been able to continue to offer employment opportunities across the organisation.
One of our more recent recruits, Loui, joined us from the Manchester Metropolitan University having arrived at his “sandwich year” during his 4-year Marketing degree.
He has since been with us for over 6 months now, so we decided to catch up with him and find out a bit more about the exciting projects he has been working on!
So, Loui, what have you thought of your time so far at UBU?
“Since joining UBU, I have been really impressed by the ways in which the company is constantly seeking improvement, whether it be our general level of service or finding new, innovative solutions to divert maximum waste from landfill. It’s really nice to have gotten the opportunity to contribute to a company who show so much care for the future of our planet and the communities they work in.”
Obviously, the climate that you’re currently working in massively differs to the one I suppose you were expecting to be operating in, how has this had an effect on your work?
“Before joining UBU, I had a number of ideas for things I wanted to organise whilst I was here, including staff and customer gatherings and more community outreach to the schools in the local area.”
“Obviously due to the risk posed by Covid-19, a lot of these ideas have not been possible, so I have had to massively adapt the climate and find new ways of communicating the companies values.”
What is the thing you would say you have enjoyed most about your time at UBU so far?
“If I had to pick one thing, it would definitely be our 12 Causes of Christmas campaign. It felt so rewarding to be a part of a campaign which had a direct impact on so many charities and it was great to learn more about the work that they do to support our communities.”
“It was also really pleasing to see how much the company got behind this campaign and their clear intentions they had of supporting the local community during this difficult period”.
How have you found working in this industry and what have you learnt?
“From my previous jobs and the work I’ve been doing as part of my degree, this industry is very different to the ones I’m used to. But I’ve really enjoyed learning more about it and the ways in which it is changing to include more sustainable practices.”
And finally, in an exciting period for UBU with the opening of the public consultation period for PAS 115, what are your thoughts on the developments?
“As a company who are constantly striving to protect our planet, it’s really pleasing that the company has made this investment in ensuring that we can divert even more waste from landfill.”
“By looking at this PAS in an even broader context, it’s pleasing that this will not only mean a better recycling rate for us, but the industry as a whole.”
“Therefore, for these reasons and many more, I’d like to encourage as many people as possible with an interest in sustaining the future of our planet to have their say on the Public consultation for PAS 115.”
