UBU supports Blackleach Allotments

– by Matthew Snape

Tucked away in a corner of Blackleach Country Park, the Blackleach Allotments are a haven for both wildlife and people. Recently, UBU discovered the allotments while exploring ways to make our own site more environmentally friendly, and this led to the start of a wonderful partnership.

What is Blackleach Allotments?

What was once derelict land has now blossomed into a thriving community space for the people of Walkden. The area is entirely managed by volunteers, who raised over £40,000 to transform the land into 37 allotment plots, a pond, a greenhouse, and even homes for pigeons! Their mission is to make gardening accessible to everyone, supporting local residents who may not have a garden and for fostering community connections through a shared hobby.

The power of community

The dedicated volunteers kindly shared advice on how we could make our site greener, guiding us on which plants to grow and when to plant them. In return, we asked how we could support them and explained our soil process for turning waste into PAS115-certified soil. This sparked their interest, leading to a site visit. They were excited about using our soil, so we arranged a donation to help enhance their allotments.

We’re proud to have contributed. The soil has already been used in flower beds and their polytunnel, supporting both the allotments and the local charity Walkden In Bloom. We’ve also committed to providing additional soil in the future to help continue improving this wonderful community space.
